Dave Ramsey and the Nashville Trip

I know I've mentioned this a few times before, but we went down to Nashville to do our Debt Free scream on the Dave Ramsey radio show. Why, you ask? Well, why not?! I have listened to literally hundreds of Debt Free calls, so I knew what to expect, but actually doing it was above and beyond what I had anticipated. SO cool.

First off, we're headed down to Nashville to visit some good friends this weekend - like, 5 days from now. Dave was unavailable on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. So we just picked a completely different day and decided to make 2 trips. It's not that far (4.5 hours), and this was an important moment. I thought March 29th would work because the kids were on Spring Break on both Thursday and Friday.

A really cool series of coincidences lined up to make our trip super cheap. First, Rob's company team was already going to be in Nashville Wednesday and Thursday (which I did not know when I picked the date). That means we got to write off the miles, and Wednesday night's hotel stay was paid for. Originally Rob wasn't needed on Friday, which meant we'd pay for the hotel on Thursday night (fine by us), but that changed, he went in on Friday, and the hotel was paid for.

On Thursday Miciah begged to go see the Parthenon in Nashville. She's super into mythology stuff. Rob was late and we were frustrated, but as it just so happens, when you show up after 4:00 p.m., admission is half off. We showed up at 4:01.

On Friday morning, we decided to go to the zoo. Best playground ever!!! Seriously, you guys should all check it out. Adults, too. Nearly everything was adult-sized. Miciah decided she wants to move to Nashville and go to that playground every day of her life. Bonus: It was raining lightly, and that means the zoo was half-off. Seriously? At this point Rob and I were just staring at each other - it was a really strange, but nice, series of happy coincidences.

The Show

Then we went to the show. Rob was really nervous, and if you know him, you'll hear it in his voice when you listen. I was less nervous - I'd listened to so many calls, I knew what to expect. Dave asks the same sorts of questions over and over, so we'd prepped our responses to the usual set. I was excited!

Dave Ramsey and his people are SO nice. They have The Best customer service. There are 3 people who get paid to make sure that anyone who shows up (and especially the debt free callers) get as many cookies, water, and coffee (or hot chocolate) as they want. Free. The kids were in heaven and actually the cookies were exceptional.

Dave comes out during most commercial breaks to shake hands with people and chat briefly. He only has a few seconds with everyone, but it's nice of him. That guy must be a people person down to his bones - I would hate to do that every 10 - 15 minutes while I was working.

Finally it was our turn and we put on headsets. We were behind glass on the other side of the lobby from where Dave sat behind the glass in his sound-proof room. A woman held up a sign that said, "Debt Free Callers. Shhh!" We were able to tell our story, and while we didn't get to fully explain every little detail about our lives, we got to say the bulk of what I had really wanted to say. Rob said, when we were finished, "We forgot to say x, y, and z!" I was like, "Are you kidding? He spent a lot of time talking to us. I'm happy with how it went."

So here it is, the sound bite of our Debt Free Scream (5 minutes):

We then got to sign the debt-free wall.

It was emotional for us - it's been a long journey, and marking the milestone with this Scream was AWESOME!  I'm so glad we did it.

Thanks for all your support, guys.  You're the best.
