Berry Identification, Part 2

An e-mail response from my Grandfather, who knows these sorts of things, regarding the leaves and berries I posted about earlier this month. To slake your curiosity:

"The big leaves appear to be dry ones from Southern Magnolia (evergreen, big tree with large flowers). The dry leaves are often more of a yellow/gold in color. The berries are "Strawberry tree" (for fruit) also called "Lilly of the valley tree" (for flowers). Small tree with showy trunk bark. The fruit can be eaten without harm but it is not tasty enough for me to eat a second one. I can not identify the seed, I would want to see the leaves first. I often use several characteristics, color, shape, odor, arrangements of leaves on stem, etc. to identify plants so I could be in error in what I am seeing.

"I had a little to do with getting the Plant Garden started but I declined to be in charge as I supposed I would become the "caretaker" when women of the garden club stopped. I contributed some of the original plants.

"It is great to let the children see and touch plants (or animals) to learn to love nature."
