I'm Becoming My Mother

My mother is a craft-er.  Serious, hard-core craft-er.  I can't even picture my mother without a book to read and a project to work on.  I've always had the reading thing, but figured the crafting thing just skipped a generation.

And then my mom and I were at a cross stitch store.  A cute mom-and-pop place crammed full of cross stitching goodness.  They have a Free bin there that my mom always looks through, and this time, for whatever reason, a kit caught my eye.  Suddenly I committed to doing a cross stitch without any pressure from my mom.  That's a first.

For months Rob would say things like, "Why again did you decide to do this?"  I would just shrug.  One never knows things like this.  But from August until February, I worked on that cross stitch most days.  I would say, "I've had fun with this, but I'll be glad when it's over.  These take so much time!"

I finished it a few weeks ago.  And what did I immediately do?  Start looking for my next project.  Did I pick something easy?  No.  Something WAY harder.  It's taken me the better part of a week just to SET UP this project:

There are no blank spaces!  ...  I've had to steel myself, getting ready for the challenge.  It could be a colossal fail, with me WAY out of my league, but it'll be fun to try!

My comments:
1 - Maybe crafting is genetic.
2 - The kids have loved it.  They like seeing my progress and they're super supportive.  When I told Elijah how much time it would take (years), he said, "All you have to do is one square (a 10x10 stitch area) a day and you'll be done in less than a year!  And Tank said, "Yes, it'll be hard, but it'll be worth it!"  Such optimism.  I love it!
3 - I bought another set, too.  Which means I have projects lined up for the next several years.  What is WRONG with me?!
4 - That thing is going to look KILLER on my wall.

Fun! I started crocheting this winter and there is something very calming therapeutic about it for me. So...if you ever want a scarf or dish cloth, let me know! :)

I've met your mother... so your safe, if indeed you do turn out just like her!

That is so great! Do you want to hear something funny...my brother actually cross-stitched an Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem for each of my siblings when they got married. So when he got engaged, my mom asked me if I'd do one for him. It was when Jared and I were first married...and we both totally became addicted! We'd actually fight over who got to work on the cross-stitch! It was hilarious. I'm with you though, it is so satisfying to see it come along. Way to be ambitious with the van Gogh!

Rachel - It is therapeutic! Something about the repetition. It's awesome.
Rebecca - I doubt I'm much like my mother actually. But she is pretty cool.
Chelle - That's funny! The next project that I have is one for Rob's office. He said, "You're not expecting me to do any of it, right?" Maybe I should! I bet he'd like it, too.
