Being Done

I've had a lot of people politely ask if Rob and I are planning on having more children.  Seems an appropriate question, since Tank will be 4 years old in July, and I thought I'd answer it publicly.  I forget who I've told and who I haven't, so I'll just give the same answer to everyone.  (A friend objected to me giving a public answer.  "It's not anyone's business but your own!"  True.  But I don't care who knows, so it's not a big deal.  Privacy is only important when you need it to be.  Besides, it's a good story.)

The short answer, if you don't care for the story, is Yes, we are done having kids.  And not just thinking about being done.  We're Done.

Now here's the story:

I go crazy when I'm pregnant.  It's not good.  For the first two pregnancies and breastfeeding periods, I wasn't sure what was going on.  But after I finished breastfeeding Baby #2, I suddenly felt like the sun started shining again.  It literally felt like I'd been living in a sort of haze for the last 18 months (that's 9 mo. of pregnancy and 9 mo. of breastfeeding), or if I'd just fully woken up from a half-dream state.

After realizing what had happened, I turned to Rob right then and begged him to be done having kids.  I asked him to put himself in my shoes and imagine living in a haze for a year and a half, and told him I wasn't up for having another kid.  Certainly we weren't having 5 children, as was our original half-plan.  Rob, as always, was sympathetic, but pulled out the trump card:  "Let's pray about it."

I didn't want to pray about it.  I told Rob that a better idea would be to make up our minds and then tell God what we'd decided.  I said that because I knew what the answer would be.  We were supposed to have another child.

Fine.  But I made Rob PROMISE that he would let me get on drugs for the next pregnancy.  Otherwise, there was no way.  People feel differently (and often strongly) about drugs during pregnancy, and I needed to know that Rob was on my side here.  Of course he was.

Our plan was to either have 1 more child, about 2 1/2 years after Elijah was born, OR to wait 5 years and have 2 more children.  Rob really wanted 4 kids (seriously, if he were the woman, we'd have 20 kids.  The man loves babies and children!), so we decided to wait.

Clearly that didn't pan out, since only a few months before Elijah's 2nd birthday we found out that I was pregnant with child #3.  It tested our commitment to the virtue of Gratitude.

We weren't very far into the pregnancy when I nearly broke down.  I knew Rob wanted that 4th child, and I wanted more than anything to give that to him.  But I also knew that I was falling apart.  It's unnerving to feel like you're losing your mind and can't do anything about it.  ...  Rob saw me struggling and said, "Let's pray about it."

Rob had to say it, because I was crying.  We approached our Father and, unexpectedly, Rob told him that we were thinking it was best to be done having children.  We hadn't discussed this before the prayer, and it shocked me.  But suddenly there was an overwhelming sense of peace that filled both of our hearts, and we knew.  ...  This experience is one of my most precious, in terms of communication with my Father in Heaven, and with my husband.  Rob was able to put aside his desires for that elusive 4th child and to see what was best for me and for our family, and Heavenly Father didn't hesitate for even a second to answer that prayer.  The answer was immediate, and it was undeniable.

At the first doctor's appointment, I made sure that the doctor would be okay with tying my tubes, because if he wasn't, I was going to find a doctor who was.  He said that I was a little young (he likes patients to be 30 when they decide), but that I had some good reasons.  Aside from going crazy during pregnancy, I had tried an IUD after Elijah was born, and it didn't work.  My uterus is a funny shape, and the IUD wouldn't stay in (it was a horrible experience, actually, but that's a different story).  Doc said we could try an IUD again after Baby #3 was born and I said, "Can you guarantee me that it'll work?"  He said he couldn't.  I told him that wasn't good enough, then.

I got on drugs around week 30 of pregnancy, and life was SO MUCH BETTER after that.  I started doing sane people things, like looking in the mirror, and Miciah stopped recoiling from me every time I moved (I never did hit her, but the threat of violence was nearly always present--it was a scary time).  We planned our lives for a 3rd child, since it was supposed to be so much harder than having 2 kids, and went through with C-section #3, along with a tubal ligation, in July 2006.

We learned a few things after that.  1 - Having 3 kids is way better than having 2 kids ever was.  Few people agree with me on this point, but for us, it's been awesome.  2 - Apparently I'm a wimp.  I told God, before Tank was born, that I needed a baby that I could handle (Miciah was a horrid baby).  Clearly, I couldn't handle much, because he sent me the world's most perfect baby.  I'm not complaining, of course, but I'm a little disappointed that I'm not made up of a more steely substance.

And most importantly, we learned that our family is complete.  After Elijah was born, Rob and I would talk about how many children we'd have.  We'd talk about the possibility of adopting or bringing foster children into our home.  We'd wonder how we'd know when our family was complete.  ...  After Teancom was born, all that talk went away.  Our family is Complete.

...

So that's our story.  Sometimes a friend will say to me, "Wouldn't it be sad to be done having kids?"  Umm, no.  I'm not sad about it at all.  In fact, for the first 2 years or so, I was practically giddy about being done!  Now, the giddiness is gone, and there's just peace.  The pregnancy and baby stages are over with, and, for me, that's a wonderful thing.

Introducing ...

The newest little member of our family. The doc was right, he sure is hairy! ...

Okay, Rob broke down Saturday and took Miciah to pick out a baby cat. He's a cute 10-week-old (this is twice as old as Max was when we got him. And this cat is already neutered) tabby cat. Miciah likes him cause he's got "stripes." I like him because he's very loving, something Max was not. But he's also pretty playful, so that's fun. We named him Peek-a-boo because when we brought him home he hid twice from us and we couldn't find him for a few hours. The first time he was under the entertainment center. How he fit down there, I don't know. So now the whole front of the entertainment center is blocked off with Rob's science textbooks (we knew they'd come in handy someday). Peek-a-boo is now almost always behind our couch, just chillin' out. He comes out to be petted and loved on, but he still runs away from Elijah. Go figure.

Peek-a-boo isn't the healthiest cat. We took him in to the vet to find out he has fleas, he's underweight and scrawny, and his diarreah is caused by roundworm. Wonderful. So he's being treated for all that and hopefully we'll have a healthy cat soon. Rob was bugged that Peek-a-boo isn't that healthy and that we're having some struggles with him (the diarreah means that he's pooped all over our house and us), and I reminded him that he's the one that wanted to get a kitten a week before we had a baby. :) But it's all good. We like him.

Elijah's Surgery

We took Elijah in for his operation consultation. The doctor thinks she felt an opening on the other side as well, so she said when they go in to operate, they'll scope the other side, too, to see if they need to fix it, too. Good plan. She also said that because he was in so much pain that one time, they want to do the surgery ASAP. He has complained a few other times, and once Rob pushed it back in, but no more screaming in horrific pain, which is good. Anyways, the surgery is scheduled for August 14th. We have yet to decide what we'll do in terms of Miciah. Obviously both Rob and I want to be there for the surgery, and if we have a clingy-needy Elijah and a not-really-fully-recovered-from-surgery Mommy, we'll probably have Miciah go somewhere for a few days. Though she's not really hard and she might be helpful, even. Who knows. Maybe I'll ask her what she wants.
T minus Two Days

That's about all that's going on around here. Miciah and Elijah are getting pretty anxious to have the baby here. So are Rob and I. :) It's time to have this baby. We found out some good news from the doctor about the C-section, so I'm anticipating this being a little better than previous experiences. Before, they cut me open and almost immediately the baby was taken to another floor and washed and given first shots and all that. I didn't see Rob or the baby for a few hours--they could have brought me another baby and I wouldn't know. Dr. Froehlich looked at me like, "How inhumane that they would do that!" He said the baby stays in the room with us the entire time they are stiching me up (unless the baby isn't healthy, in which case they would take him, but that makes sense) and doesn't leave until we leave. How nice is that! So I'm excited to have us all together, especially since this time that was my desire.

And honestly, I can't think about anything else other than baby-on-the-way. I feel like it's taken over my brain. It feels like there's so much to be done, but I don't have the energy to do most of it. I don't sleep at night any more. At all. I stare at the cieling until 2 and then sleep fitfully after that. Luckily Rob is home all this week and so I've been able to sleep in. Otherwise I think I would be in tears at the end of the day. But only 2 more nights of torture. Actually, only 1. Because the last night neither Rob nor I sleep anyway, so it'll be a relief to NEED to wake up at 4:15 a.m. At no other time in my life would I think this is a blessing.

We know you're all praying for us and thinking of us and we appreciate the support. Thank you! and we'll let you know how it goes as soon as one of us gets back on-line, though most of you will have heard by then.

Not Much to Report On

Elijah's Surgery News

Things here are good. Elijah has not complained any more about his hernia, and we are hoping to keep it that way. We have a consultation with Children's Surgery Center on July 18th. I am assuming we will then set up the surgery date. I'm guessing that since the appointment isn't until July 18th, the surgery won't be until late August or September. Who knows, though. Even if they could do it earlier, though, I have a feeling I won't want it to be much earlier than that. ... I'll let you all know when the surgery is and if there's anything you can do for us.

Pregnancy - T minus Two Weeks

No, Dad, this is not an update to say I'm in labor. Braxton-Hicks all day long, but no labor. We are hoping to avoid all labor until the safely scheduled 21st. That's less than 2 weeks away, so I think we'll probably make it.

Go Mode!

In terms of how I'm feeling. I have hit the final go mode (nesting just sounds so weird to me). I have cleaned the house from top to bottom about 5 times. I think I have used an entire roll of paper towels cleaning every piece of glass in the house. I keep looking at things going, "This is dirty. I MUST CLEAN IT." It's compulsive and weird and I will be glad to put this stage past me. I think Rob will, too. I worked him hard yesterday cleaning and doing things. But, because I'm in the Ready For Baby Stage, it means I have a little more energy. So I feel better now just before baby than I have for at least 2 months. I can handle that.

Having said that, I don't have much energy at all. And on top of that, my body still can't handle a lot. We went to the store as a family on Friday. Intended to go to another store, too, but I just wasn't up for it. I have been avoiding the sun and going outside at all costs. The sun and heat drain me really quick. We went to a BBQ last week for 2 hours. I came home and slept for 2 hours. There's a picnic next Sunday that we're all invited to. I'm sending Rob with Miciah.

P's Baby Blessing

We had company today, and that was a lot of fun. Our good friends the T's had their baby the first week of June and the baby blessing was today. They have a little one bedroom apartment, so we invited the whole clan over to our house so they could all be in the same room together. It worked out well and it was a lot of fun to have company that brings their own food! Rob and I worked really hard to clean the house, but they didn't leave a mess when they left, so it's still clean now. That's the best kind of company. Brings their own food and eats off paper plates. :) They were here for a few hours, but it was more draining than I assumed it would be. Rob and I both just chilled for a few hours after they left. My body obviously was a little stressed, but hey, it was worth it. And their little baby is really cute. It's been weird to hold their little one and think, "I will have one of these very soon." But we're ready for it.

The Secret Baby Name

We have picked out a name, but we have decided to keep it until he is born to announce. Seems like if we've waited this long, might as well keep it till the end. We went through 25,000 baby boy names from a baby book and to top it off, the name we chose wasn't even in there! How's that for funny? But we've been using the name amongst ourselves, so it's finally feeling like his name. So that's a comfort. For a while it seemed like nothing would sound right except Baby Robert. And Elijah says the name really well, so that makes me happy, too.

Last Ultrasound

We had an ultrasound for week 36 on Monday. It was fun to see the baby so big! He is still a boy, so no worries there. Everything looked good. The doctor predicted that he would be just over 7 lbs. (like 7 lbs. 2 or 3 oz.), and have a full head of hair as well as hair all over his back. :) It was really cool to see this hair floating there. You really could see it! It was neat. About the hair all over his back, Rob said, "See, dear, we ARE having a monkey." Great. Maybe he'll be blonde-white like Elijah and you won't be able to see the hair on his back. :) It'll be fun to see what he looks like.

We're excited to have the baby and see everyone soon. Hopefully we can keep things calm between now and then. The next 2 weeks of my calendar are clear, which is a nice feeling. It will be nice to not have much to do.

Thanks for all you guys do for us. We love you!

Updates and Travels

Life is good out here. Things have settled down a little from the stress of tests and lots of chaos and people over for dinner and such stuff. Of course, we created most of that stress, but that's okay. I have somewhat gotten used to how tired I feel and can now guage how I feel in a pregnant sense instead of just "I am SO TIRED." Now it's that I'm tired still, but I can get things done. I felt great Thursday and got a LOT done. I then paid for that Friday. :) I need to learn to pace myself, but when I feel really good it seems like a limited time offer and I have to rush to get everything done.

The Family is Sick

Miciah is more sassy than ever. We're going to figure out how to make her not be rude. Then we'll bottle our secret and sell it to parents around the world and make our fortune. Elijah has an ear infection. I don't know why the kid can't stay healthy, but he's happy anyway, so I guess that's alright with me. He had a yeast infection that we finally got rid of and then he got this ear infection. The day we got him diagnosed with the ear infection he had a throwing up episode and got me twice (I felt like I was doing costume changes for a play). He gave this same sickness to Rob who slept on the couch for 2 days feeling very miserable. I was glad he stayed home from school (I have to almost twist his arm most times and he felt bad enough that he volunteered this time), and I was a little glad that there was some role reversal. It was almost poetic when I heard this come out of Rob's mouth: "Sorry I didn't get anything done today and that the house is a mess. I just haven't felt very good." I pointed at myself and nodded.

Traveling to CA Soon

Miciah has a break in pre-school in March for a little over 2 weeks. So I decided I should go somewhere. I was thinking maybe like Toledo or closer, and Miciah said, "How about let's go see C!" So this got me thinking and I forced Mom and Dad to fly me and the kids out to spend some time in California. I will fly in to CA on March 4th and fly out on March 24th. One day short of 3 weeks. So B & J, be ready to have some visitors for a while in there. ... C is going to drive out to CA to see us (meaning Miciah, really), and that'll make Miciah and C happy. Well, all of us happy, of course. I'm excited to go out there and to have somewhere else to be other than home. It'll be the last time I go somewhere before Christmas, probably. All our summer plans have been xed because of baby on the way. Not that we mind, but it means all our grand ideas of doing fun things have gone away. So it'll be fun to get away while I can and we'll look forward to Christmas. At least then Rob will be able to travel with me and it won't be so crazy.

So for most of you, I'll see you soon. And for the others of you, that's my update. We love you all.

An Update

I don't get around to e-mail much lately, as you all have noticed. By the time I get the time, I don't often have the energy, or some other combination of things like that. But here's the latest at the Thacker home.

Rob's Tests

Rob took his big big test last Wednesday. It's his qualifying exam that if he doesn't pass with a 70% or better we get kicked out of grad school. He should know in a matter of days what he got on the test. He is very confident about it and is pretty sure he passed. So the stress looming over our family for the 3 weeks before that test is now gone and life is good. Rob is again funny and relaxed, and we like him that way. He took another test Monday for the class he's taking and surprised himself (he didn't have much studying time cause he was worn out from the qualifying exam, and he doesn't like the subject either) by setting the curve. Go Rob.

Ultrasound

Wed. the 25th I went to the doctor for the first time and found out that we are NOT having twins. This is the best news I've had in a while. :) One at a time is fine with me. As far as the doctor could tell, the baby has no birth defects (they can't tell for sure on Downs, though he's pretty sure the baby doesn't have it, and they can't tell on the heart cause it's too little right now)--no spinabifida (however you spell that), the brain is normal, organs he could see are normal--and the due date is right on schedule. I forget which was the first day of my last period and put down Oct. 20th, which put my due date at July 27th. The ultrasound put it at July 29th. Oops, it just means I put down the wrong date. I knew it was either the 20th or 22nd. Obviously it was the 22nd. I'm debating telling the doc, though. He said we could keep it the 27th and it doesn't matter much, so I'm okay with that.

Rob Turns 27

Rob's birthday was the day after, the 26th. Rob is 27 now and that seems weird to me, but I like that he's mature. :) He went to school like normal and we had R & C and T T, a good friend, over for dinner. We feasted unlike normal and it was great. T stayed until 10 pm chatting with us. T is one of the only people on the face of the earth who can make Rob laugh. It was fun. Then Rob slept in Friday and didn't go in to school and did work at home instead. Life is good. ... I got Rob a pan for his b-day. Doesn't that sound like the most non-romantic, lame gift you can think of? But he was excited. It's a little bitty pan to fry his eggs in in the morning. We also rented movies to watch for his b-day cause Rob is a movie junkie.

Rob's folks are coming in tonight and taking us out to dinner at a restaraunt of Rob's choosing. I don't know where we'll go. We were going to make dinner for them, but thought them taking us out was better. :) We'll feed them dinner tomorrow instead.

Pregnancy

I am feeling pretty good in terms of pregnancy stuff. I am tired all the time, but otherwise feel really good. I was sick this past weekend and gave my kids to whomever would watch them cause I was just knocked out with this cold. I feel much better, though, and have no real complaints. There are worse things than being tired all the time.

Company

Life is good and we stay busy, even though I thought I'd be ready for breaks. Come to find out about myself, though, that if we don't have company scheduled for like a week, I start inviting people over. A curse from Mom and Dad, I think: liking to have people over for dinner. How boring to just have Rob and I and the kids! We probably eat more meals with other people than by ourselves. Over this next week and a little bit, I'm inviting over 2 couples that have had us over to their house more than we've had them over to ours. This is not okay with me. We will not be the family that doesn't reciprocate. I remember (as a kid in my parents' household) having a ton of people over to eat at our house, whole families of sometimes 10 or more people. And I remember being invited to ONE person's house to reciprocate. I have since decided this is not cool with me and have made it a rule that if someone invites us over, we WILL invite them over. My little pet peeve. We're never offended when others don't reciprocate, but we won't be the guilty party. :)

That's life. Sorry it's been so long. I was thinking about sending pics of the ultrasound, but you can't see a lot anyway. No gender stuff or anything. ... The doc does have this "4D ultrasound" technology that's pretty cool. It interprets the ultrasound images into a 3D picture of what you're looking at. Pretty rad. But I will be sending, as soon as I get around to it, a picture that Miciah colored. It's beautiful. I think I'm going to scrapbook it, it's that neat. I'll take a picture of it and send it along hopefully before the year is over. :)
