Old Faithful, 2.0 - Part 5

Day 7 - Old Faithful area, Midway Geyser Basin, and Fountain Paint Pots

July 9. Wednesday night Lori and Derek joined us, so we went back to Old Faithful to see it again, and to see more of what we hadn't seen before. There are a lot of features at Old Faithful, so you can go 2 or 3 times and see new things each time.
Rob, Teancom, and Old Faithful, as one big happy family:
A highlight of the day was Teancom's moose hat. We let each of our kids pick out a souvenier a piece, and the moose hat is what Teancom wanted. We walked out of the store and a lady laughed and said, "Is that what he chose?" She must have kids. ... The hat made the other tourists happy, and they made comments like, "Oh! It's the only moose I've seen!" and "Good thing there's no hunting in the park."

But the REAL highlight of the day was Grand Geyser. Grand is a predictable geyser, and the sign said that there was a 4 hour window for a possible eruption. We showed up right in the middle of that 4 hours, and within 5 minutes of our arrival it erupted! Talk about good timing. Grand only goes off every 11 hours or so.

And Grand is BY FAR the best geyser I've seen. It's actually a group of 3 geysers: Vent, Turban, and Grand. Grand is a decent sized pool and the WHOLE THING erupts with gushings and splashings. It goes about 180 feet in the air, in spurts, which is taller than Old Faithful. Plus it goes off longer. And it's more impressive. Seriously, at the end of the day it was Old Faithful 2 points, Grand Geyser 700!
Grand, just getting started:
Here you can see all 3 of the geysers. Vent on the left. Turban, the little one in the center. You can barely see it bubbling. And then Grand on the right.
Here's a video:

Midway Geyser Basin and Fountain Paint Pots coming up.
