I wanted to post some of the cute/funny things she's done lately.
Animals and Test Questions
She brought home her school work yesterday. Every week we have to look over her tests and then sign a piece of paper saying we looked the whole thing over. This is not a problem: Miciah does well in school. Her tests are nearly always 100%, and she's proud of that. Well, yesterday she missed a question on her reading comprehension test, giving her 12 out of 13. That's a 92% and she was upset. She brought me the test, showed me the question she missed, and said, "But Mom, I got this right!" I looked it over.
The question: Name two jobs that work with animals.
Her answer: A Zoo dentest and a Teacher.
I don't know what a zoo dentist is, but she says they talked about it in class. Either way, certainly zoo staff work with animals. The problem, clearly, was the Teacher answer. I said, "Miciah, teachers work with kids." She looked at me with confidence in her eyes and said, "Yeah. We're animals." I started to object and then realized that she was right. Humans ARE animals.
I told her she was welcome to take the test back to her teacher (her FIRST GRADE teacher) and argue the question with her. Because, technically, Miciah's right.
Miciah decided not to take the test back and argue it with her teacher, thankfully. That's just what Miss Lyons needs, right? A too-smart kid bugging her about test scores. ...
Rob and I both thought to ourselves, "Miciah is us." In terms of schooling, we identify strongly with Miciah's competitiveness, and how easy things come to her. And I remember arguing test questions with my elementary school teachers. And I remember the look they always gave me. I realize now that the look was something like, "Kid, you can't handle getting a 98% instead of a 100%?" I think teachers would have been more willing to work with me if it would have made any difference in my overall grade. ... I guess I just didn't realize that arguing test questions started in 1st grade.
Artwork
A cute kite she made at school:
It says: "Spring is ... when I fly kites and play Outside. Spring is a wonderful sesen. I can have ice cream Outside in the Spring! I love Spring because I like to Plant!"
Schools go crazy for Earth Day. If you're a parent, you already know this. One of the things Miciah did was make this:
It says: "I can help the Earth by recycleing, planting seeds, watering plants, growing trees, not littering and picking up litter. I Love the world vary much. I want to clean the water, air and everything. The world is vary importent to us."
Then this cute rainbow made out of scraps of paper:
It's one of my favorite art projects. I think it's beautiful.
Miciah also made me a huge two 12x12 page poster. She used markers, stickers, and paper squares to decorate it. It says:
"Got 2 brothers and a Dad. But, I feel like I'm missing someone. But who? You! Of corse! My Mom!
Mom and Me.
Dear Mom, I love my Mom vary much! I love you sooo oooo vary, vary much! I miss y o u v a r y much when I am at school. My Mom Loves me vary much! I love you! Love, Miciah Thacker"
Miciah's adorable.
